Sally Ann (25 y/o) & Emily May (28 y/o) are best known as a photography duo.
Born in Sydney and raised in Jakarta, positioning these sisters to engage with both Western and Eastern worlds. With a degree in Fine Arts at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Fashion Business at Lasalle College, their practice stems from fashion
and art photography background.
Shooting since 2012, Sally & Emily’s images are fuelled by self-discovery and contemporary femininity, taking inspirations from their diverse cultural heritage and personal stories.
We’re facing the challenge in creating based on the fact that only 5% of female artists having their works presented in galleries this present time. The purpose of this show is to introduce our works and art practice, coming from marginally cultured backgrounds (Indonesian, Chinese, and Australian) while closing the gender gap.
By bridging both the fashion and art industry, we aim to provide a safe space for art as therapy in an open conversation. The direct benefit to our career development is to showcase our body of work to Sydney as it marks our homecoming journey to Australia after working and living in Indonesia for 20 years. Of course, we feel a shifted perspective from having 2 home countries. This body of works is desired to expand a broader audience, clientele, and create dialogue. Our mission is to aspire young creative to create in supportive diverse community regardless gender, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.
